The Attorney General this week indicted Supreme Court Justice Sarath de Abrew for grave sexual assault following a complaint made by his female domestic aide a few months ago. Indictment papers were served in the Colombo High Court on two counts of grave sexual assault and the Police were advised to pursue separately in the Mount Lavinia Magistrate’s Court a case against Justice de Abrew for simple hurt.

The judge was accused by his domestic aide of sexually molesting her at his residence. Police filed action against him in the Mount Lavinia Magistrate’s Court, but now the Attorney General has brought him before a higher court on graver charges.
A Supreme Court judge can only be removed by Parliament, but if he is convicted of a criminal offence he may face a jail sentence.
Justice de Abrew denied any wrongdoing before the Mount Lavinia Magistrate’s Court and is reported to have sent in his retirement papers to the President recently.
