Lankan still held without trial in the Maldives
View(s):A Sri Lankan arrested in the Maldives over an alleged conspiracy to assassinate President Abdulla Yameen was this week further detained for 15 days, Foreign Ministry officials said. His detention period was extended on Monday pending further questioning on his alleged links with the assassination plot.
The 24-year-old Lahiru Madhushanka has not been produced in a court. Lawyer Shabdika Wellappili this week flew to the Maldives to meet the Sri Lankan who is being held in an island off Male. “He is in good health. The questioning process is on. I have been able to discuss some of the legal aspects of this case,” he said. Mr. Madhushanka’s family, living in the outskirts of Colombo, yesterday insisted he had no connection with the armed forces here and had gone to Male in search of a job.
His mother said they had given the details of the local agent and its Maldivian contact who were to arrange the job.
She said she hoped the Maldivan authorities would treat this case sympathetically as her son had no intention of resorting to any terrorist activity.
