Discarded Kaushal gives wakeup call with timely ‘ton’
Rain played a key role in the opening week of the AIA Premier Inter-Club Limited Overs Cricket Tournament as a match was abandoned, two being held up in Colombo while the remaining two played outside going out for results yesterday.
At P. Sara Oval Saracens and Tamil Union shared two points each after rain abandoned the game. Saracens put into bat made 238-5 in their allotted 50 overs with a useful partnership from middle-order batsmen Harsha Cooray and Umesh Karunaratne bolstering their total, after losing two early wickets.
Cooray batted sensibly to hit 92 off 135 deliveries with nine boundaries and a six while Karunaratne, playing a bit aggressive remained unbeaten on 96 off 122 balls with six boundaries and six. Rain prevented Tamil Union chasing the target as the match was eventually called off.
A wet outfield at Galle proved to a crucial factor as Chilaw Marians were skittled out for 199 leaving Galle CC an easy chase.
The top score for Chilaw Marians, who were put into bat, came from late-middle-order batsman Thikshila de Silva, who made 54 off 88 deliveries with four fours and a six. Galle CC lost three wickets before reaching 69 in their run chase.
Hours after the Sri Lanka team embarked on a tour to New Zealand, SSC opener Kaushal Silva, who should have been with the entourage, gave the selectors a knock on their heads with the first century of the competition, against Army SC at Panagoda.
SSC made 327 and had the Soldiers struggling at 46-4 in their run chase. Silva’s 106 off 126 deliveries had ten boundaries and a six, added power to the SSC total with a rapid 94 coming off his partner Danushka Gunathilaka’s bat.
Gunathilaka faced 99 balls and hit eight boundaries and four sixes while forming an opening partnership of 183 with Silva, who lost his place in the national team.
Rain halted play at Colts where the hosts were struggling at 125-8 against NCC. Priyamal Perera top scored for Colts with a fluent 52, which came off 90 deliveries inclusive of two boundaries. Fast bowler Farveez Maharoof claimed a five-wicket haul for NCC, who won the toss.
Bloomfield made 238 against Badureliya SC at Reid Avenue where play was halted soon after the innings break. Bloomfield’s total was strengthened by two half centuries from Primosh Perera and Sachin Jayawardene who made 66 and 51 respectively.
Perera faced 86 deliveries and hit four boundaries and two sixes while Jayawardene’s 51 came off rather quick, from 52 deliveries inclusive of three fours and two sixes. Badureliya SC won the toss.
The curtain raiser match was won by Sri Lanka Ports Authority who beat CCC by 33 runs on Duckworth/Lewis Method at the CCC ground on Friday. Put into bat first SLPA were restricted to 199 and CCC was 160-9 when rain stopped play.
