The intensity to the run for seats at the forthcoming cricket elections is reaching sky high. Respective parties from both factions are busy trying their luck to rope in voters by enticing influential individuals with post election positions. So much so it is learned that some even have been promised high positions which are already occupied at Sri Lanka Cricket. Some also have indicated that even if they have signed up with a respective faction for a post election position, they would not influence the club vote in any way.

Yes, we make it together or alone seems what Jayantha Dharmadasa, the former president of SLC whispering to Thilanga Sumathipala’s ears – Pic by Amila Gamage

So far in respect of those who have handed over their nominations, the Ministry of Sports have received fourteen objections. The Ministry of Sports will take up the complaints from December 10 and the final list of eligible candidates will be known by December 19.

The most vociferous objection has been received from former national cricket captain Arjuna Ranatunga who is voicing his concern about those who have ties with the gaming industry. Arjuna Ranatunga claims that they have had numerous requests from various parties asking him to contest for the position of President; he made it a point to follow correct protocol by forwarding his nominations for the post of vice president. He said “I could have got special permission from the Minister of Sports to contest for that position, but, I did not do it”

He further said regulations as per 2013 January 15 persons who are directly or indirectly involved with the gaming industry are not eligible to contest at the SLC cricket AGM. Ranatunga intends to request the Minister of Sports to intervene and quash such nominations from the list and also make representations to the ICC to study such regulations which is relevant to that institution.
He also said that during the last cricket election there were instances of political interferences at the cricket AGM, but, during this Yahapalanaya era, such occurrences would not take place.

However Thilanga Sumathipala also has taken certain steps for damage control. In a surprise move Jayantha Dharmadasa – the Immediate Past President has also handed over their nomination to contest for the post of president in addition to his nomination to contest as vice-president.

Besides that the Thilanga faction is confident. Mohan de Silva who is contesting for the secretary told the Sunday Times “yes, we have brought in Jayantha Dharmadasa as an alternate candidate, but as far I am concerned I am confident that Thilanga Sumathipala has got clearance from all relevant parties and we are going ahead as planned”.
