Trixi opposes Yasa’s nomination as Asian Netball Federation President

Sri Lanka Netball President Yasa Ramachandra’s name has been nominated as the next president of the Asian Netball Federation. The election for this post will be held on December 21 at the Annual General Meeting in Hong Kong. The present Asian Netball Federation (ANF) president is Lakshmi Victoria, which post she has been holding since 2013. Her name was nominated as the president of the ANF by the Sri Lanka Netball Federation and her name was forwarded to the Sports Ministry for approval.

In another move Trixi Nanayakkara’s name too has been proposed by the State Services Netball Association for the post of Asian Netball Federation President’s post. This too has been forwarded to the Sri Lanka Netball Federation and subsequently to the Sports Ministry for approval.
However according to the Sports Law Lakshmi Victoria’s name was withheld by the Sports Minister and was rejected. At the last moment before nominations closed on December 7, the Sports Minister approved Yasa Ramachandra’s name even without Ramachandra requesting for it.

Meanwhile the Director General of Sports K.D.S. Ruwanchandra had informed Nanayakkara that she has all the qualifications to be the next president of the Asian Netball Federation and had submitted her name. In the meantime Nanayakkara has written a letter to the Director General of Sports stating that it is wrong to nominate someone who had not even thought of holding the Asian Netball President’s post and to clarify why such a move was made. Copies of this letter have been sent to the Sports Minister and the Sports Ministry Secretary. She also states in the letter not to make such requests in future and to act in a responsible manner.
Prior to this Tamara Dharmakeerthi and Lakshmi Victoria held the posts of Asian Netball President. This is the third time that a Sri Lankan is vying to be president of the Asian Netball Federation.
