3D Concept Studio is a rapid prototyping start-up founded in 2013 by Nissanga Warnapura. The company aims to take 3D printing – which has a reputation for being expensive – and make it accessible and relatively affordable.

The studio offers services such as 3D printing, laser cutting, 2D/3D design, 3D video walkthroughs and 3D scanning, etc.

Rapid prototyping is a bundle of techniques used to quickly fabricate a scale model of a physical part or assembly using three-dimensional computer aided design (CAD) data.

Construction of the part or assembly is usually done using 3D printing or “additive layer manufacturing” technology.

Working with materials (including cloth, paper, plywood and MDF, among others), they are able to quickly fabricate a prototype to suit your needs – be it experimental or functional.

“If you have an idea of what you want, then we can take it from there,” explains Milinda Perera, Chief Marketing Officer. “We’re able to handle any part of the conceptual stage, from developing on an idea, to design and fabrication.”

The team at 3D concept studio include designers, architects, engineers, draughtsmen and other professionals that are part and parcel of the one stop for all your needs.

Their clients vary-from top corporates to institutions like the University of Moratuwa to individual clients (they once designed a prosthetic arm using 3D printing technology) and even fashion designers.

These clients and their needs come from all walks of life and business. “Our team is able to handle most projects,” says Suresh Mohanraj, Head of Operations.

These projects are to be found at various design stages at the 3D Concept Studio premises in Kohuwala – a model of an apartment complex, little figurines, a model of a plane, for example.

Interestingly, they recently worked with fashion designer Kasuni Rathnasuriya for the KUR label to create eyewear for her runway models.

Other more mainstream forays include phone covers, wedding invitations, lampshades…the team is open to most ideas. They also plan in the near future to set up a 3D printing lab with around 20 machines for design students to train with.

“We want to enable and encourage Sri Lankans to create and innovate,” says Chief Executive Officer, Nissanga Warnapura. “Our primary goal is to make our services accessible and reachable nationwide.”

Their Christmas décor and cards are priced from Rs. 50-500. You don’t have to order large quantities-in fact, you can easily order just one, says Milinda.

“We have a range of standard designs that are offered, so those can be very quickly produced according to order. If you want it customised that can be done but may take longer, as it has to be designed as well.”
