Police traffic and PR expert Senaratne makes final journey
View(s):A former police officer who was one of the pioneers in the formation of the Traffic Safety squad and Public Relations, Senior Superintendent of Police (retd) S.B. Senaratne passed away and his funeral was held this week at the General Cemetery, Borella Colombo.
He was responsible for initiating Road Safety squads in schools countrywide, a project which started from Kingswood College in Kandy.A lecturer on road safety and public relations, he served at the police training school and in several stations, including Kuruwita, Balangoda, Awissawella, Mt Lavinia and Ratnapura, before he retired in 1989 as Director, Police Public Relations, Media and Crime Prevention at the Police Headquaters and as the First Commandant, Home Guard and Civil Defence.
He also served as SP Crimes Jaffna from 1978 to 1979.
Mr Senaratne was cremated with full Police honours on Thursday evening amidst a large and representative gathering of Police , Navy and Air Force officers. The Inspector General of Police N.K.Illangakoon was represented by Senior Superintendent of Police Ajith Rohana who at the end of the official proceedings handed over the Cap and the Medals to Late Senaratne’s wife Claudine Senanaratne.
He leaves behind his wife Claudine, three sons and a daughter. He was also the brother of the Sunday Times Kandy correspondent L.B. Senaratne.
