Pigeon Island National Park

Pigeon Island is a National Park which is situated in Trincomalee. It is one of the Marine National Parks of Sri Lanka. It is situated exactly a kilometre away from Nilaveli, a coastal town North West of Trincomalee. The name of the island is given from the Rock Pigeon which is found on the island.

Pigeon Island National Park is known to have some of the best coral reefs in Sri Lanka. It is a  mind-boggling experience with its soft white sand, corals on the beach and clear blue waters, unlike any other beach you have seen in Sri Lanka.

Visitors to the island use the opportunity to go snorkeling, where they can see the various types of colourful reef fish, multi-coloured corals and starfish as well. You can see large turtles and green turtles as well.Pigeon Island consists of two islands called Large Pigeon Island and Small Pigeon Island. Pigeon Island was quite affected by the 2004 tsunami.

Pigeon Island National Park is a place with a breath-taking view and definitely a place to go to.

My favourite book

Myfavourite book is ‘Geronimo Stilton’.
I like Geronimo Stilton because in the book there are funny things and adventures. Geronimo is bigger than his sister Thea Stilton. Geronimo is the editor of the Rodent’s Gazette and Thea is the special correspondent at the Rodent’s Gazette. Geronimo has an assistant called Pinky Pick. She is only a fourteen year old girl. She is smart and knows how to handle a computer. (She is a genius). Pinky made her own magazine called Fur Kids Only.
Geronimo has a cousin called Trap Stilton,
a nephew called Benjamin Stilton, an aunt called Aunt Sweetpaws and a sister called
Thea Stilton. His cousin owns a shop
called Cheap Junk for Less.

Christmas

Christmas is a great religious festival.
It is celebrated by Christians all over the world.
It falls on December 25 every year. It is the birth of Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ was born at Bethlehem in Jerusalem. December 25 is a public and bank holiday in Sri Lanka.
All Christians wash and clean their houses. They are colour-washed or painted. New clothes are sewn or bought for all the members of the family. Special Christmas cakes, sweetmeats and wine are prepared in homes. Christian homes will have a beautiful Christmas tree. It is decorated nicely. Christmas carols are sung in various places and churches.
So Christmas is a great festival. It brings joy and happiness to many people in Sri Lanka and abroad.

My trip to Singapore

We took a flight to Singapore at 3 o’clock on September 3. It was the first time I went to another country. It was so nice to look at the clear sky while on the plane. One of the hostesses gave me a fluffy doll.
At last at 10 o’clock in the night we arrived in Singapore. There were strict rules in that country for not littering roads, unlike in Sri Lanka.
In the morning we went on the Singapore Flyer. It was the biggest ferris wheel in the world and I think
I saw the whole of Singapore from the top of it. We went to Universal Studios and went on rides and went to see some shows. Some of the rides were the ‘Madagascar’ ride, the ‘Puss in Boots’ ride and the ‘Jurassic Park’ ride. Then we went to the Singapore Zoo.
I saw unusual animals that I have never seen before.
I was so sad when we were leaving Singapore. I wish I could come on another day when I am big.

Flowers
Flowers have been important to man since ancient times. People love to grow flower plants in their home gardens. Botanical gardens like Peradeniya and Haggala have a wide variety of flowers. Natural forests like Sinharaja are also abundant in beautiful flowers.

Flowers are fragrant and they beautify the environment. They appeal to everyone. They brighten every occasion of our lives. We use flowers to express our feelings. They are also used in religious activities. Buddhists offer flowers to Lord Buddha, Hindus garland their gods with flowers. People use them for decorations. Flowers are an integral part both at weddings and funerals.

Today flowers have become an important source of income. Many varieties of flowers are being exported to foreign markets. Selling flower plants also brings in a good income. Many valuable flowers are now endangered. Recently the ‘Araliya’ trees were attacked by some fungus. Fungi, pests, diseases and climatic changes are the major threats to flower plants.

We must take necessary steps to overcome these threats. People should be encouraged to grow flower plants in their home gardens. Flower plants should be looked after well. They should be manured, weeded and watered regularly. Precautions should be taken to protect them from pests like snails, caterpillars, rats and insects.

I am a mango tree. I have a huge trunk in which I have spread many branches  with a lot of greeny leaves. I am about  150 metres high. My roots give me water to bear fruits. I have a juicy fruit which birds, bats, squirrels, people and small kids like to eat. My fruits can be eaten in many ways.

It can be eaten raw, cooked, pickled, chutney, and sweetened and used as jam. People can also earn money by selling my fruits. Birds used to make nests on my branches. I also give shelter when birds sit on my branches chirping and singing songs, when squirrels run all over my branches playing with each other. I feel very happy and proud of myself.

My dream is to have a simple rural life
‘Life’ in the sense doesn’t only mean living in a luxurious house. It also refers to living in a calm, quiet environment. Unfortunately, I’ve been born in an over-crowded city. I always see vehicles, dozens of people moving here and there.
I’ve read in storybooks about teens who have thrilling adventures. The specialty of them is that they all live in a rural environment. They don’t have servants standing outside their doors at any time of the day. But they have each other at any time of the day.

They live in unity, cooperation rather than jealousy and greed. They live in
mud-thatched houses. Natural breeze and ventilation is abundant in their houses.
The educational systems also vary in rural and urban areas. In urban areas, the only goal of the parents is to educate their children. They won’t see their children in higher ranks of the societies with or without ethics or morals. But the rural parents educate their children in every aspect, mainly in morals. It is the most prominent in rural education.
Every single night, I wish that I would wake up the next morning in a more simple, pleasant environment. But when I wake up it’s the usual busy environment.
