Daniel – youngest in Sri Lanka
View(s):St. Joseph’s College allrounder Jehan Daniel clinched his place in the Sri Lanka Under-19 team for the World Cup in Bangladesh and became the youngest player in the 15 member squad that was named earlier this week.
Daniel who was born on April 13, 1999 will have the rare honour of being eligible to play a second World Cup in 2018 as the ICC event for the Junior Cricketers is held once in two years.
Daniel represented Sri Lanka against the touring Pakistan Under-19 team in October this year as the Opening bowler and lower order batsman. He was forced to skip the preliminary games of the recently concluded Triangular that featured England and India this month due to the Ordinary level examination. However, he was back in the side for the Tri-Nation final which Sri Lanka lost by five wickets to India.
Jehan who has been representing St. Joseph’s from the age of 10 is an immensely talented allround cricketer. A medium pace bowler and a hard hitting batsman, he is also a brilliant fielder. He is the grandson of the late Lesley Saverimutthu, one of Sri Lanka’s long standing Umpires and son of Shehan and Maureen. Shehan was a versatile sportsman who represented St. Joseph’s in 1992 while his uncles Mohan, Adrian and Marlon Saverimutthu represented St. Benedict’s College in the 80’s.
