Muruttettuwegama assumes duties as Lankapuvath Chairman
View(s):Attorney-at-Law and Legal Educationist Nanda Muruttettuwegama has assumed duties as chairman of Lankapuvath, Sri Lanka’s National News Agency. Explaining his vision, Mr. Muruttettuwegama, who is also the chairman of the Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation, said on Wednesday that he would do his utmost best to restore the National News Agency to its former glory.
Mr. Muruttettuwegama is also the Managing Director of Centre for Professional Studies (CfPS) Law School and a senior lawyer. Lankapuvath Ltd. was established in 1978 on the lines of national news agencies of India (Press Trust of India), Malaysia (Bernama News Agency) and China (Xinhua News Agency), following a proposal from the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO).
Media magnate Esmond Wickremesinghe, father of Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, served as the first chairman of Lankapuvath. Lankapuvath currently operates as an international news provider for AsiaNet Pakistan (Pakistan), Factiva Dow Jones and Company (United States), New Delhi Television Ltd. (India), Organisation of Asia-Pacific News Agencies (OANA, Russian Federation), and Sputnik News Agency (Russian Federation).
