‘Colombo by Jeep’ Four wheel magic
‘Colombo by Jeep’ is a novel tourism concept introduced to the country with the current tourism boom. ‘Colombo by Jeep’ is the brain child of the adventure lover Nishantha Abeysekara, who revolutionised the country’s tourism pattern with the introduction of World War 2 Wills Military Jeeps for adventure activities.
With the recent tourism boom, the city of Colombo and its suburbs have been given a new lease of life with new jeep safaris. The new fleet of open-to-air vehicles is in action now with ‘Colombo by Jeep’. The magnificent fleet of vehicles used in the World War era includes the 1948 Land Rover series 1.
‘Sri Lankans have seen those war classics in movies such as Godfather, Pearl Harbour, and ‘Missing in Action’, ‘Air America’, ‘Deer Hunter’, ‘Delta Force’ or ‘Platoon’.
But never have dreamt of driving a very same vehicle in Colombo. Now anybody can experience the real life drive with this magnificent fleet of vehicles deployed by ‘Colombo by Jeep’ said Nishantha Abeysekera, who operates this new trend in tourism and sports.
At present the Sri Lankan road transport for tourists consists of several conventional transport systems, air-conditioned coaches, Minibus, vanS and cars.
The only other option is the open top, double decker bus operated by a leading travel agent on a fixed route on all city tours.
A major transformation has taken place in every part of the country with foreigners and Sri Lankan expatriates flying to Sri Lanka for holidays, leisure and business.
‘We are differnt to other city tours . This pioneering venture is a first on the global tourism platform as it is the first time that World War II, Vietnam War and classic jeeps are being used for city tours.
We offer visitors a unique experience to see Colombo while on one of our open air jeeps. You are privy to a 360-degree visibility which is ideal for photography and sightseeing’ Nishantha explained his new venture.
The Willys, Jeeps, Land-rover 1949 series 1 and the two fiat convertibles will add a new adventure to what ‘Colombo by Jeep’ offers tourists who will look for more than sun and sand.
‘Colombo by Jeep’ is the best option for people who are willing to compromise comfort to try out this new concept of touring to discover the indescribable naturalistic, unseen and untouched raw beauty of Sri Lanka.
‘For those who are more adventurous and want to test their driving skills, can always do at either the Attidiya Bird Park or on the street of Colombo. The fleet of classic jeeps is a rare sight on the streets of Colombo and its suburbs.
It almost tends to draw a lot attention from both motorists and pedestrians due to its visual presence’ he added
Colombo by Jeep off-road adventure trips will bring together outdoors, nature, wildlife and down to earth people who prefer something different to common sightseeing in an antique World War 2 Jeep with fantastic tours fit every budget that takes one to other worlds, in terms of nature and adventure on private trails.
The City tours in two open 1942 world war Jeeps with tailor-made tours to any part of Sri Lanka City tours, off-roading, water crossing, and adventure safaris on private trails from extreme to moderate conditions.
A traditional Fishing experience, where one can cast the nets (visi dela) and use a rod made of toddy palm (kithul palm bili piththa) is yet another unique adventure on the agenda with these jeeps.
‘The travellers ,who are looking for sun bathing have the opportunity to do so while enjoying a scenic tour of the city. Sunbathing while travelling in an open jeep to their destination is an added advantage’ he added.
While on tour, the guest will enjoy free bottled water, free soft drinks and juices, snack, beer, lunch or dinner.
‘ And the other most important and most valued facility we provide is the entire tour will be filmed with a Sony high definition video camera and still shots with Nikon D 90 and a soft copy will be given to all guests or uploaded on fb free of charge’ Nishantha said.
‘Colombo by Jeep has opened up a world of possibilities and given Sri Lanka Tourism an edge on a global perspective by offering these unique open-air Jeep tours in vehicles, which have made a mark in history’ said Nishantha, who is a veteran hotelier and a professional tour operator with years of experience behind him.
