Photo focus: The tired and tattered Southern Expressway
The Southern Expressway -the country’s only four line highway route- that connects capital Colombo and the southern town of Matara has become non-driver friendly due to negligence by the departments tasked for its maintenance.
This is at a time when the vehicular movement in the highway is increasing.
Undergrowth and overgrown grass line the two sidelines of the highway have not been cropped. The bars which separate the lanes of traffic that were damaged by an accident still remain unattended, distracting drivers as they attempt to overtake other vehicles.
Grass planted on the median strip which divides the highway lanes too is overgrown and untidy all the way to the intersection.
Drivers allege that though the government makes millions of rupees daily through toll revenue collected levied for use of the highway, the authorities have singularly failed to maintain the facility.
