Work on railway extension beyond Beliatta halted
Construction work on the Coast Line railway from Beliatta to Kataragama has been temporarily halted to address the concerns raised by farmers residing in the area through which the line is being built, Kataragama Railway Project Technical Officer Y.K Samarajeewa said.
He said the ongoing railway extension from Matara to Beliatta will continue, but work on the stretch from Beliatta to Kataragama has been temporarily halted.
He said farmers can continue to engage in their farming activities without any hindrance for now but did not say for how long the construction of the railway line has been halted.
Mr.Samarajeewa made these comments when a meeting was held with officials of the District Agricultural Committees to discuss the difficulties farmers are facing due to the work on the railway line.
He said that alternative routes for the railway line from Beliatta to Kataragama have also been discussed, though nothing has been finalised as yet.The work on the 26 km extension from Matara to Beliatta is currently underway.
