As Mary Anne David marks 47 years of teaching vocal music, her students- both past and present- are preparing for a tribute show to celebrate her immense contribution to the Sri Lankan talent pool. The show will happen on February 5 and 6 from 7.30 p.m at the Lionel Wendt.

Mary Anne’s versatility as a teacher of vocal music is quite legendary. Her versatility in developing the vocal technique of students in various genres of singing- be it opera, lieder, jazz, Broadway, contemporary popular music and even oriental music has made her a sought after figure in the industry.

“Together with her producer husband, Andrew, Mary Anne founded the Mary Anne School of Vocal Music and the performing group ‘The Merry-An Singers’ which have enthralled audiences both locally and internationally for several decades,” noted a member of the organizing committee. Many of her former students have gone on to successfully pursue singing in the fields of contemporary, jazz and classical.

“In the past two shows were put together by students to express their gratitude,” noted the organising committee representative. “However this concert goes beyond, as Mary Anne herself has carefully chosen the music to be performed by the various choirs (Merry An Singers , junior, senior, past and present, and The Mary Anne David Chorale) and the soloists.” The audience can expect pop, rock and jazz numbers, she added. Neranjan De Silva, Joshua Asokan and Christopher Prins will accompany the singers as they perform.

Tickets for the show are available at the Lionel Wendt.
