UNGA chief hails Lanka
View(s):The United Nations General Assembly President Morgens Lykketoft has congratulated Sri Lanka for positive contributions to the UN causes helping to build consensus on various international issues.
Addressing a ceremony held at Sri Lanka’s UN mission to mark the 68th anniversary of our Independence, Mr. Lykketoft said that despite challenges and upheavals domestically, Sri Lanka had consistently supported the work of the UN General Assembly, and played an important role as consensus builder on various issues, including on the draft comprehensive convention on terrorism (CCIT).
Sri Lanka’s Ambassador Rohan Perera is the head of the CCIT.
Mr. Lykketoft said it was regrettablethat despite Ambassador Perera’s commendable efforts, member-states had been unable to deliver concrete results on the CCIT.
“This is an evening for celebration, an evening where we rejoice in the fact that the UN is an Organization for all nations, and an evening where Sri Lanka celebrates its place on the international stage, and its contribution to a better world for all,” he said.
