S. Thomas’ were home for lunch when they crushed Nalanda by an innings and 78 runs in the Under 19 inter-school cricket encounter concluded at Mt Lavinia yesterday to record their sixth outright win of the season.

In the process the Thomians are recording an outright win over Nalanda after a lapse of 16 years with the last being in the year 2000 under Gihan Fernando and also the incumbent coach Dinesh Kumarasinghe who was the coach.

The writing on the wall was there for the Nalandians when play ended on day one after being bundled out for 96 runs in the first inning and then struggling on 42 for 5 when they were forced to follow on.

The second day’s play saw them coming into the field needing another 139 runs to avoid an innings which they failed to achieve as they lasted only 15.3 overs being able to make only another 61 runs being bundled out for 103.

Opener Ravindu Kodituwakku was the hero of the side as he cracked a 108 with 18 boundaries and laid the foundation for their win.

Ravindu was associated in two fruitful partnerships first an opening wicket stand of 104 with Yohan Mendis and the other of 62 runs for the fourth wicket with Sithara Hapuhinna to help his side post a formidable score of 277 for 7 declared.

President’s College Kotte was making steady progress against D.S. Senanayake College having resumed on their overnight score of 60 and with the score on 142 for 5 they collapsed when they lost their remaining five wickets for the addition of 33 runs being bowled out for 175 in the morning session of play in the match played at Wijerama Mawatha.

This was in reply to DSS’s score of 357 for 8 declared made on day one which came on the back of half tons Pasindu Adithya, Shahad Ahmed and Vihan Gunasekera. President’s Kotte made to follow on with a deficit of 182 runs was struggling on 47 for 6.

Richmond has already taken a first innings lead against Moratu MV when play stopped for lunch on day two in the match played at Moratuwa.

Richmond after bowling out the home team for 133 resuming on their overnight score of 143 for 7 was helped by Avindu Theekshana who was unfortunate to miss out on a ton by three runs enabling them end their innings with a score of 232.

Bandaranayake MV Gampaha continuing from their overnight score of 23 for no loss made a bold reply of 229 for 5 in reply to St Anthony’s Wattala’s sore of 293 in the match played at Kadirana.

In the other matches that were played saw St Benedict’s and Mahinda Galle taking first inning leads over Maliyadeva and Royal Panadura at Kotahena and Galle.

A career best knock of 198 inclusive of 29 boundaries and four sixes by Raveen Yasas paved the way for Devapathiraja MMV Rathgama to record a massive innings and 267 runs win over Asoka MV Colombo in the match played at Kolonnawa.

Raveen was also involved in a 153 runs stand for the sixth wicket with Prasanna Karunawansa enabling Devapathiraja MMV make a score of 471 for 9 declared.

Asoka MV after having being bundled out for a paltry 53 in the first inning was left with the daunting task of erasing a mammoth deficit of 439 runs which they were unable get even closer and was bowled out for 151 runs.

P. de S. Kularatne MV Ambalangoda recorded a thrilling seven wicket win over St John’s Jaffna in the match played at Jaffna.

P. de S. Kularatne MV chasing a challenging target of 195 runs in 30 overs was guided by an unbeaten knock of 79 by Pathum Dilshan which helped them reach the target in 26.3 overs.

Gurukula MV Kelaniya was struggling on 134 for 7 against St Servatius Matara in the post lunch session in the match which began at Uyanwatte Stadium in Matara.
