Police investigate kidney racket on Health Ministry tip-off

The police this week said that they have started investigations into the kidney racket on a request by the Health Ministry.

Media spokesman ASP Ruwan Gunasekera declined to comment in detail on the investigation but said the Colombo Crime Division (CCD) is visiting all hospitals where the kidney transplants have taken place as alleged in the Indian media reports.

He also said the doctors allegedly involved in irregular activities in the transplantation process performed in those hospitals will also be questioned.

He said the delay in starting the inquiry was due to there being insufficient details in the letter handed over to the IGP requesting an investigation into the alleged racket.

Director General of the Health Ministry, Dr. Palitha Mahipala told Sunday Times that the CCD had met him and had recorded more details on the case, to initiate investigations.

He said the Inspector General of Police (IGP) had been requested to co-ordinate with the Indian police, if necessary.

He added that Health Minister Rajitha Senaratne will be addressing the media on his return from a Russian tour on Saturday (13) and would disclose the details of the five member committee report handed over to him on Friday. “Probably on Monday or Tuesday,” he said.
