Bradby rivals – Royal and Trinity face off today
Some very competitive and interesting games are in prospect when the Cup Quarters of the Inter-School Under 18 Rugby Sevens kick off at the Royal Rugby Complex this morning.
Bradby rivals – Royal and Trinity face off in one game. The Science-Isipathana game will be another. Isipathana will be striving to avenge the rout in last year’s President’s Trophy knock out tournament.
St. Peter’s -Wesley and Kingswood –Thurstan will be the other quarter-final clashes.
On yesterday’s showing, St. Peter’s, Trinity, Science and Kingswood could stake claims for semi-final berths.
The Anthonians, who were tipped by some rugby experts to go the distance, failed to do so when they were held to a scoreless draw in their final group match by a resolute Thurstan side.
The latter well knew that a draw would suffice and, accordingly, they came up with a good defensive display to stall the Katugastota lads who were one of the physically superior teams.
One player caught the eye and that was Science Colleges’ Sanjula Roshan, a diminutive winger who was a treat to watch. Science’s chances against the formidable Pathana lads will depend a lot on what Sanjula does.
Kingswood impressed with some hard, straight running. They gave the impression that they knew what Sevens Rugby is all about.
Wesley excelled by defeating Vidyartha 14-0 to march into the quarters. It was pleasing to see the matches taking place without a delay in between. The cooperation of the officials must be placed on record.
