Helitha half ton holds Royal’s bid for victory
Two sterling performances by Helitha Bambaranda and Movin Subasinghe helped Wesley make a great recovery against Royal in the morning session of play on day two in the Under 19 inter-school cricket encounter played at Campbell Park.
Wesley came into the field struggling at 83 for 6 in reply to Royals score of 279 for 8 declared made on day one which came on the back of a knock of 112 made by Geeshath Panditharatne which was his third ton of the season.
Panditharatne was supported by a half ton from Tiran Danapala. The game is played for the Sir Frank Gunasekera trophy, which is in the custody of the Royalists.
Helitha cracked a 67 inclusive of eight boundaries and three sixes and associated in a valuable 65 runs for the eighth wicket with Yomesh Ranasinghe who chipped in with 21.
Later Movin hit a 42 which included two boundaries and four sixes and put on a last wicket partnership of 52 runs with Shanuka Madushan who remained unbeaten on 16 for Wesley to end with a score of 240. Royal batting the second time were 75 for 2.
Nalanda was on top against Mahinda Galle on day two in the match played at Campbell Place as they had the visitors struggling on 101 for 6 in the post lunch session of play.
The opening days play saw Nalanda making a massive score of 405 for 9 which they declared when play began on the second day.
Nalanda’s score was bolstered by a career best knock of 175 coming from Kasun Sandaruwan which had 22 boundaries who also put on a 122 runs stand for the fifth wicket Nimnaka Ratnayake.
St Peter’s continued their domination over St Benedict’s on day two in the Under 19 match played at Bambalapitiya.
St Peter’s in reply to St Benedict’s score of 135 resuming on their overnight score of 163 for 6 went on to make 233 with Hashan Wanasekera making a top score of 100 which included 11 boundaries and two sixes.
St Joseph’s took the upper hand against St Anthony’s Katugastota in the Under 19 match which is also fought out for the Murali/Vaas Trophy played at Darley Road.
The second day’s proceedings saw St Joseph’s continuing from their overnight score of 169 for 6 ending up their innings making 233 after bowling out St Anthony’s for a low score of 138.
Half tons by Sanjula Abeywickrama and Dilsara Shaminda helped Isipathana take a first inning lead over St Sebastian’s when play stopped for lunch on day two in the match played at Moratuwa.
Isipathana resuming from their overnight score of 110 for 5 made 203 for 8 before declaring. This was in reply to St Sebastian’s score of 169 made on day one.

Tharusha Kavindya slams unbeaten ton for STC Matara By P D de Silva An unbeaten 115 off 146 balls with 15 boundaries by Tharusha Kavindya and a five wicket haul by Hashin Dilmal for St Thomas’ College Matara and a five wicket haul by Heshan Madusanka for Piliyandala Central College were the highlights of the game which ened in a draw at the Uyanwatte stadium. Two sessions of play was lost due to the damp square at Uyanwatte a result of non availability of covers sufficient to cover all twelve center wickets on the ground. STC invited to bat first were 76/5 and reached 233 due to Tharusha’s ton. Left arm leg spinner Heshan Madhusanka was rewarded with a five wicket haul. Piliyandala Central could only manage to post a first innings score of 143 troubled by Hashin Dilmal 5/43 and Praveen Madushan 3/37.
