NSASL National Stroke Walk actively promotes stroke care
View(s):The ‘National Stroke Walk’ to mark National Stroke Day was held in Negombo on February 27 at 7 a.m. by the National Stroke Association of Sri Lanka (NSASL) with a large crowd participating. The walk was led by State Minister for City Planning and Water Supply Dr. Sudarshini Fernandopulle, Health Services Director-General Dr. Palitha Mahipala and NSASL President Dr. Udaya Ranawaka.
While the walk began from the Sarathchandra Gunaratne (Kadol Kele) Grounds, Archbishop Nicholas Marcus Fernando Mawatha, a Stroke Awareness Programme and a free health screening clinic followed at Ave Maria College Grounds. Many schoolchildren got a ‘lesson’ not only on stroke but also on how to prevent stroke, which message they could take back home to their parents.
Stroke is the 3rd leading cause of death and the leading cause of disability worldwide. It can affect one in six people during their lifetime.
The NSASL has been actively involved in improving stroke care and promoting stroke preventive activities in the country through public educational programmes, training programmes for healthcare workers and stroke caregivers, screening clinics and free medical camps to mark both the National and World Stroke Days.
