Udyanga and Uththama overcome seniors to win Mt. Lavinia Sea Swim

For two successive years Udayanga De Silva of Madampe Central College and Uththama Silva of Mahamaya Girls School Kandy dominated to win the 79th Annual Two Mile Sea Swim of men’s and women’s individual championships at the Mt. Lavinia Beach last Sunday.

Last year too these two swimmers won the events and the special feature of the event was that they were able to topple the seniors to emerge winners, some of them from the Army and the Navy.

Udayanga De Silva finished the event with a time of 41 mts. 28 secs while Uththama Silva returned a time of 46 mts. 58 seconds. Udayanga is aged 19 and Uththama is 15-years-old. Uththama was able to win a silver and a bronze medal at the 12th South Asian Games (SAG) held in India. Their aim is to take part in several international meets in order to bring honour to Sri Lanka.

The Team Championship was annexed by Sri Lanka Army and the women’s championship was won by Mahamaya Girls School Kandy. S. M. Chandrapala of Kinross Swimming and Life Saving Club and G.H. Nandani of Civil Security Department won the titles for being the oldest swimmers at the meet.

The event was organised by the Sri Lanka Swimming and Aquatic Club and the Mt. Lavinia Hotel.

Girls under 15 championship: (1) I. Lakshika Sudusinghe, (Dewananda M.V. Ambalangoda), (2) Ovini Rathnayake, (Mahamaya Balika Kandy), (3) Madara Jayarathne (Mahamaya Balika Kandy).
Boys under 15 championship: (1) Nuvinu Perera, (STC Mount Lavinia), (2) Amjad Hasan, (Lyceum Wattala), (3) M.C. Lakshan De Silva, (Dewananda M.V. Ambalangoda)
Differently abled swimmer: W.K.S. Viduranga, (SL ARMY)
Team championship – girls under 15: (1) Mahamaya Balika Vidyalaya Kandy (53), (2) Sri Dewananda Vidyalaya Ambalangoda (40), (3) Sirimavo Bandaranaike Vidyalaya Colombo (18).
Team championship – boys under 15: (1) St. Joseph’s College (Colombo 50), (2) Sri Dewananda (Ambalangoda 30), (3) Lyceum International School Wattala 28).
Oldest women’s swimmer: G.H. Nandani, (Civil Security Department)
Oldest men’s swimmer: S.M. Chandrapala, (Kinross Swimming & Life Saving)
