St Anne’s defeats Maliyadeva after seven years

St Anne’s College Kurunegala defeated home town rivals Maliyadeva College Kurunegala by 31 runs in their 21st ‘Battle of the Rocks’ one day limited overs encounter concluded at the Welagedara Stadium in Kurunegala. After put in to bat first St Anne’s made 267 in 48 overs thanks mainly to middle order batsman Tharinda Wijesinghe who hit a fine 50 in just 44 balls with 4 sixes and 3 fours.
Openers Pubudu Ganegama and Vimukthi Bandara have scored 40 runs each and also added 61 runs for the first wicket. For Devans Damitha Silva did most of the damage by taking 4 for 65. In reply Maliyadeva could manage only 236 in 43.5 overs. Skipper Damith Perera hit a sparkling 95 from 92 balls with 2 sixes and 11 fours but none of the other batsman went past 27. There were five run outs in Maliyadeva innings. This was Annites eighth win of the series and the first since 2009.
