Gateway Colombo protests against Lyceum International Wattala winning overall title
Lyceum International Wattala emerged overall champions at the 16th International Inter-School Athletic Championships for the eighth successive year at the Mahinda Rajapaksa Sports Complex, Diyagama. Gateway College Colombo lost the event after a tough fight by two points. Lyceum Wattala collected 981 points while Gateway Colombo obtained 979 points. In the wake of this Gateway College’s Director of Sports Derwin Perera lodged a protest to the organisers of the meet that a boy who is not a member of Lyceum International Wattala had taken part in the under 19 Long Jump and Triple Jump events and six valuable points had been gained by him which had put Lyceum Wattala in front enabling them to be champions. Derwin Perera has requested that an immediate inquiry be held and to give the winning overall title to Gateway College Colombo.
The Director General of the International Schools Athletic Championships (ISAC 2016) Palitha Jyatilleke states that the boy concerned is a member of the winning team and that the complaint had been made long after the meet and that this has no bearing in the overall result.
Seventeen new meet records were set up and Shehan Wisanperuma of Lyceum International School Wattala, the Under 19 Boys Long Jump champion had cleared 6.88 metres to take the Best Athlete’s award. Poornima Guneratne of Leeds International School Panadura cleared 1.68 metres in the High Jump event to be adjudged the Best Athlete amongst the girls. 1866 athletes took part from 24 International Schools at the meet. Port and Shipping Minister Arjuna Ranatunga was the chief guest
