Siyane Blue and Green clash on April 6
The inaugural Siyane Blue-Green limited over cricket encounter between Henegama Madya Maha Vidyalaya and Bandaranayake Madya Maha Vidyalaya Veyangoda will take place at the R. Premadasa International Cricket Stadium on April 6, commencing at 9.30 a.m. The first match of the series will be a one day affair and will switch to the longer version in the years to come. To mark the 75th anniversary of Bandaranayake MV and the72nd anniversary of Henegama MV this big encounter of Siyane Korale is sure to attract the attention of students past and present along with the parents and well-wishers is being organised by the Old Boys Associations of both schools with the blessings of both Principals and staff members.
To predict the outcome of this inaugural encounter will be a tough one as both teams are evenly balanced with a slight edge held by the Henegama lads, as both schools play in the Division III of the Singer Schools cricket championship. Henegama MV did well to enter the quarter-final of segment I but went down to St. Peter’s College, Negombo. Having won all the nine matches they played Henegama lads showed a lot of promise both in batting and bowling. Led by third year coloursman Iruka Chamal who is an attacking captain who likes to throw a challenge at the opponent to make a game interesting.
This stylish left-handed batsman will have to be closely watched by the Bandaranayake attack. Dilan Sampath is Iruka’s deputy is the leading all rounder of the side who bats right hand and bowls off spinners. Henegama MV with a batting lineup studded with five top class batsmen capable of upsetting any strong bowling attack consist of a well balanced bowling attack of pace and spin. On the other hand Bandaranayake Madya Maha Vidyalaya made a steady progress though they failed to impress this season with only a solitary victory.
Led by all-rounder Malindu Manabharana who enjoyed a fine season with the bat and ball will have to lead from the front when it comes to this big encounter. The batsman who is sure to steal the limelight will be the right handed batsman Sajith Pushpakumara with two superb centuries to his credit. This attacking batsman will be a treat to watch when in full flow and is sure to entertain the expected large crowd at this inaugural encounter. All rounders Maleesha Kalansuriya and Bhawantha Wijesinghe are capable of taming the Henegama bowlers and will cause problems to the Henegama batting line-up with their well controlled deliveries.
The bowling attack is spearheaded by Sri Lanka Under 19 poolist Thilina Nipun Gunasekera who works out a good pace with the ability to move the ball both ways is sure to rattle the front batting lineup making way for the spinners Bawantha Sangeeth (left arm leg spin), Maleesha Kalansuriya (right arm off spin) and Vimukthi Chiranthaka (right arm leg spin) to rip through the middle order. A good day’s cricket is on the cards and the spectators are sure to get their money’s worth as both captains will apply a positive approach in making the encounter remain in memory for a long time.
