Right of reply: MTD Walkers PLC says no partnership with Kolkota flyover builder IVRCL
View(s):Referring to our last week’s Page 1 story on the Kolkata bridge disaster, MTD Walkers PLC has sent us the following statement:
4th April 2016, Colombo: MTD Walkers PLC ,today stated that they would like to clear any confusion that may have occurred as a result of the article that appeared in a leading English newspaper in Sri Lanka.
MTD Walkers PLC wishes to confirm that it is neither a JV partner nor the local partner of M/s IVRCL of India. The only involvement the company had with IVRCL was with regard to a sub contract to carry out the piling work at a UDA low cost housing site in Maligawatte, through its subsidiary Walkers Piling (Pvt) Ltd. This project was completed and successfully handed over in January 2013.
MTD Walkers PLC wishes to inform the public that its fully owned subsidiary Walkers Piling (Pvt) Ltd, the pioneer pile construction company in Sri Lanka has enjoyed a leading position in market since its inception and has over the years successfully completed some of the most prestigious piling projects in the country.
REPORTER’S NOTE: What MTD Walkers Plc says is exactly what our news item stated — i.e. that it completed the piling work for the Maligawatte project in 2013. The company is merely distancing itself from the Kolkota flyover disaster and the construction company involved there, a position it is entitled to take.
