The sniffer dogs were brought in after Police recovered the T- 56 automatic weapon and five revolvers robbed from the Laggala Police station on Thursday were found behind a water tank of the temple.

The weapons had been recovered following a tip-off from the chief incumbent monk who had seen the weapons hidden behind the water tank.

Police said the monk had stated that he bathed at the water tank on Friday but had not seen any weapons there. However yesterday when he went for his bath, he had seen the weapons and immediately notified the Police. It is believed the weapons were hidden there early last morning.

Meanwhile the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) officers questioned several police personnel who were on duty on the day the weapons were stolen.

Three police officers who were on duty at the time have been interdicted pending further investigations.
