Handagama highlighted among Masters
Renowned filmmaker Asoka Handagam’s latest film “Age Asa Aga’- “ Let Her Cry”, has been selected to represent World Cinemascape – Masters’ at the 17th Jeonju International Film Festival – South Korea. Held between April 28 and May 7, ‘World Cinemascape: Masters’ has selected 15 directors who have established their own with their unwavering outlook on the world and their distinct styles.
The collection of films includes Manuela De Oliveira’s unreleased film «Memories and Confessions” and 16 new films of different genres by veteran filmmakers of the world.
Visit or Memories and Confessions is a legend in the history of cinema. According to his wishes, this film came to light following his death. Junun, the first documentary by Paul Thomas Anderson, Jose Luis GUERIN’s The Academy of the Muses which tells the philosophical story of love, and The Son of Joseph by Eugene GREEN which is a projection of biblical allegories also are also in the list. Sunset Song by Terence DAVIES which demonstrates the dignity of narrative drama, Cornelius PORUMBOIU’s The Treasure, which shows the essence of the aesthetics of irony, Masao ADACHI’s Artist of Fasting, which is close to the extremes of leftwing anarchism, Bleak Street by the Mexican cult artist Arturo RIPSTEIN and The Clan, an irrational comedy about the link between crime and politics are all must-see films.
‘Let Her Cry’ is Handagama’s 8th film and the lead female role is done by veteran Swarna Mallawarchchi who completes 50 years of her life in cinema in this June. With Swarna, the veteran Bengali Actor, Dritiman Chatterji plays the lead male role. Music for ‘Let Her Cry’ is by Chitral Somapala, edited by Ravindra Guruge, cinematographer is Channa Deshapriya and colourist is Dinindu Jagoda.
Let Her Cry produced by Dr Jagath Wijenayake for Silumina Films is to be screened at Regal cinema for a limited period.
Considered as one of the “Third Generation” in Sri Lankan cinema, Asoka Handagama gained international recognition with ‘Me Mage Sandai’ (This is my Moon)(2000) which screened at Film Fest Gent 2000. In 2009 Jeonju International Film Festival invited ‘This is my Moon’(2000) and ‘Flying With One Wing’ (2002), ‘Him, Here After’ (2012) was officially selected many festivals including Jeonju International Film Festival and Toronto International Film Festival.
