Dambulla hospital infested with bed bugs
View(s):
An infestation of bed bugs at the Dambulla Hospital is making the lives of patients warded at that institution a misery.
Patients charge that they are unable to sleep during the day or at night due to this menace. Badly injured or dangerously ill patients are the worst sufferers as they are unable to leave their beds.
During a visit to the hospital patients lifted the matresses of their beds and showed visitors thousands of bugs crawling under the mattresses and between planks of the beds. Many patients who refused to use the bug-infested beds were seen lying in the corridors of the hospital.
However Dr. Gamini Senanayake Director of Medical Services of the hospital was not sympathetic to the complaints regarding the infestation of bugs. He said, “we have taken necessary action a few times…”. According to him, “the best suggestion was to close down the hospital”, but hastened to add that in an area like Dambulla it was not possible to close the institution down for even an hour.
