Pawan still at the top
The leadership of the All-Island Schools contest of the 37th Bata-the Sunday Times Most Popular Schoolboy Cricketer of the Year 2016 competition is still in the grips of Pawan Dias of Royal College, Panadura as the results of the tenth week come out. His tally soared up to 5120 after adding up 1367 votes during the two weeks, where a combined count was made during the holiday period.
Lahiru Thambawita of Holy Cross College Kalutara follows next at second with a tally of 4059 votes and his collection during the combined weekends was 877. Pawan’s progress and Lahiru’s gradual drop in collecting votes has made the deficit swell into 1061 whilst two weeks ago it was 571. Yohan Mendis of S. Thomas’ College is running at his own pace at third with a tally of 2740, after obtaining 640 votes during the holiday period. One of the other contenders who could come in as a threat to the top three is Lakshina Rodrigo of St. Peter’s College, who is at the fourth position. But he needs to double up the current move.
The list of 21 names have been trimmed down to 10 in the All-Island Schools category with few more weeks to go before the completion of the competition. However readers could make those names reappear in the list by sending in coupons in favour of their favourite schoolboy cricketer.
Madawa Fernando of De La Salle College Mutwal remains to enjoy the leadership of the Emerging Schools category for the tenth continuous week without much challenge from Dilshan Madushanka of Siri Piyarathana Central Padukka. The International Schools category is yet to kick off.
