SLT call routing racket busted
View(s):Sri Lanka Telecom (SLT) said this week it will initiate legal action against illegal termination of international voice calls by passing SLT and Mobitel international gateway switches under the provisions of penal code and Sri Lanka Telecommunication act. In a full-page newspaper advertisement, SLT has warned the “perpetrators” that civil action will be taken by the SLT Group in District Courts or High Courts to recover the business losses and the damages incurred. Illegal call termination is a punishable offence under the Sri Lanka Telecommunication act which could impose penalties as well as three year imprisonment.
SLT will be publishing the list of names and phone numbers of perpetrators detected thorough its systems, the SLT Group said. Call termination, or voice termination, is a telephony service of a telecommunication carrier who completes the telephone calls originated by a customer, the calling party, to the intended destination, the called party. One way of call termination is the use of SIM cards and mobile phone Fixed Wireless Terminals (FWTs) to receive calls from any part of the world to Sri Lanka illegally. The main operators would route international calls being made from landline and mobile phones through internet to the VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol, or phone service over the Internet) gateway set up by the racketeers, it was stated.
