Photographer in search of reality and humanity
Monthly documentary film screening at the Digital Film Academy of the Sri Lanka Foundation will screen ‘The Salt of the Earth’ the life and work of photographer Sebastiao Salgado, who has spent forty years documenting deprived societies in hidden corners of the world.
This French-Brazilian biographical documentary film directed by Wim Wenders and Juliano Ribeiro Salgado was selected to compete in the Un Certain Regard section at the 2014 Cannes Film Festival and won the Special Prize. The film was aslo nominated for the Academy Award for the Best Documentary at the 87th Academy Awards and won the 2014 Audience Award at the San Sebastián International Film Festival and the 2015 Audience Award at the Tromsø International Film Festival.
For the last 40 years, the photographer Sebastião Salgado has been travelling through the continents, in the footsteps of an ever-changing humanity. He has witnessed some of the major events of our recent history; international conflicts, starvation and exodus. He is now embarking on the discovery of pristine territories, of wild fauna and flora, and of grandiose landscapes as part of a huge photographic project which is a tribute to the planet’s beauty.
The film will be shown at 4 pm on May 12 at 100 Sri Lanka Foundation Mawatha, Independence Square, Colombo 7 and the screening will be followed by a discussion on ‘Reading life and Cinema within photography and introduction will be made by Uditha Gunasekara.
