The recent shock death of Prince has rekindled interested in the icon’s music both albums and singles. Spearheading them all is the song ‘Purple Rain’ from the film of the same together with the album. In the UK the song ‘Purple Rain’ surged from 65 to No: 6. Back in 1984 when it was first released ‘Purple Rain’ peaked at No: 8. Prince is credited with his then band the Revolution on ‘Purple Rain’. Several other songs by Prince figure out on the charts as well on top 40.

In another development it is reported that a secret archive known as the vault is to be drilled open at the “Purple One’s” Paisley Park mansion as only Prince knew the combination. It is said there is enough material inside to release a new album every month for the next 10 years. Most songs were recorded in the 1980’s. Meanwhile the video clip Prince recorded for the theme of the Batman film in 1989 has been uploaded on YouTube. Prince had disallowed most of his songs from YouTube during his lifetime.

A documentary on Whitney Houston has been approved by the late singer’s family. The film directed by Kevin Macdonald and will cover the highs and lows of her career. Clive Davis the Arista chief who mentored Houston along with friends and family are expected to cooperate on the documentary project. Whitney Houston died aged 48 in 2012. She sold over 200 million albums and had seven consecutive No: 1 songs on the US chart.

Drake has dominated the UK singles chart for a third consecutive week with the song ‘One Dance’. In doing so the Canadian artist has set up a record of 7.86 millions streams which contributed to the 129,000 copies the song sold this week.  ‘Once Dance’ overtook Adele’s record of 7.32 million streams. But Adele’s achievement with ‘Hello’ was in the very first week of release back in October 2015. Drake’s is the main artist on ‘Once Dance’. The song is taken from his album ‘View’ which was released on 29th April.

Meanwhile Drake has become the third Canadian artist to top the UK singles chart this year, following Justin Beiber and Shawn Mendes. Zayn Malik is the only home grown act to top the singles chart this year.

U2 guitarist The Edge became the first rock artist to perform in the Sistine Chapel at the Vatican on April 30. He performed four songs on acoustic guitar and was backed by a small choir of Irish teenagers. The occasion was part of the Cellulor Horizons a conference on regenerative medicine that was attended by over 200 doctors, researchers and philanthropists.

Britney Spears will receive Billboard Music’s Millennium Award on 22nd May in Las Vegas. She will become only the third recipient of the award after Beyonce in 2011 and Whitney Houston in 2012. Britney Spears is expected to perform a medley of her hit songs at the awards.
