Vehicle buyers in Sri Lanka are faced with a choice. Do they purchase a brand new export model or an unregistered vehicle meant for the Japanese domestic market? Associated Motorways (AMW) is setting the record straight and in a media release, General Manager of Nissan, AMW Rajith De Silva explains that AMW is the only company authorised by Nissan Motor Company Japan to import brand new Nissan vehicles to Sri Lanka. “That is why we are able to bring the international spec. model X-Trail which is backed by a 3 year or 100,000 km manufacturer’s warranty, the only warranty that is backed by Nissan Motor Company Japan.”

Mr. De Silva added that AMW also ensures that the Nissan X-Trails sold at AMW are all fully loaded with all the options being factory-fitted. “In fact our vehicles have more options as standard than the domestic X-Trail models such as genuine leather interior, electric front power seats and 18″ alloy wheels.” In domestic models, customers will have to use the services of unauthorised technical help in fitting it with accessories such as the audio systems. An issue that can arise from fitting other, unauthorised accessories is that it will have unintended side effects.

For example, fitting audio systems that haven’t been recommended by Nissan Motor Company Japan can result in the on-board electronics disabling the cruise control system. Mr. De Silva also explained the difference in warranties provided by AMW and third party warranties. “Even a cursory comparison between Nissan warranties and third party warranties will show a stark difference. Third party warranties cover manufacturer defects – ‘major defects’ is the term they use – on gearbox and engine. But that term is left to the interpretation of the seller.”

Regarding the registration of vehicles, Mr. De Silva said it is important as it affects the long-medium resale value. “The RMV registration is critical in this regard. It helps to distinguish between a brand new vehicle and a pre-registered vehicle. At Nissan – AMW, we only sell brand new vehicles and this holds true to the rest of our Nissan portfolio.” Mr. De Silva added that price differences at AMW are higher than unauthorised car sales because of Nissan’s sales warranty that could save millions of rupees to customers in the event of a major repair.  -(NG)
