BUDS, FLOWERS AND ALLWhen gifted a bouquet Of gorgeous blooms and buds My heart fluttered I was at loss for words. Taking time to drink in The inviting essence I tucked them in a China vase. They stood in water On the table for a week. Yet I pitied to discard them. As I dropped the faded blooms Drooping, unravelled buds, Decaying stems, browned leaves Into the garbage bin I held my breath At the gross, stinking smell There were worms in the bottom. My heart fluttered. I was at loss for words. Rebekah Angela Fernando

DISAPPOINTMENTEveryday, I gaze deep into the still tender shoot Waiting for a ray of hope That would blossom into a noble flower. The expensive plant Bought at a high cost, From the international flora exhibtion Disappoints me every morning. Everyday, The wild lilies at the wall, Uprooted time to time, Yet sprung uninvited, Pregnant with buds, Wait for me to notice The wild delicacy, common, But colourful. My expensive expectations Disappoint the lilies every morning. N. Dilhari Fernando |
CASSIACaught in the sun The golden blossoming Of cassia on roadsides, Tasselled clusters hung Dripping with rounded buds Waking into wide – eyed blooms Of saffron – gold. Faces lit in mute enchantment Caught by the profusion Of bursting blooms. It was for a season. The magic fled with falling flowers A silent epitaph To the ending season Smothering the stone – set pavement Broken buds and withered petals Crushed underfoot, The trees stood bare Unrobed! MY GIFT WITH LOVETangled I stood amidst heaven staring at all the buds. I staggered through touching one, I whispered your name. Gorgeous!! It bloomed for me. Waiting for nothing I ripped the flower with delight as the destination being you took a marathon and reached you. Seeing me in your eyes offered the gift with my heart telling I love you.
