View(s):Mum’s Love
My mother surprises me in many ways. She is kind-hearted, loving and caring.
But when it comes to studies and discipline, she is the opposite. This amazes me and I sometimes wonder how many sorts of mothers live inside my mother.
Deep down in my heart I know her eternal love, endless care makes her all that. I see tears in her eyes if Malli or I cry out of hurt. This makes me realize the pain she goes through.
She says that every mother is the same. But I know my mother is super special. I wish her a very happy Mother’s Day because in my little world she is the best!
I will always love you mum!

My favourite sport
My favourite sport is cricket.
It was founded in England. There are 11 players in a team. They are batsmen, bowlers, wicket keeper, fielders and captain. The umpires judge the game and decide whether it’s a boundary, six, wide, no ball or out. My favourite batsman is
Kumar Sangakkara and bowler is Lasith Malinga.
I like cricket because our whole body gets exercised and we become strong. It is a tiring game but I like playing it. There are clever cricket players in the Sri Lankan team.
Arjuna Ranatunga, Sanath Jayasuriya and Muralitharan were some famous players from Sri Lanka.
I too like to become a famous cricketer like them. I have joined to play cricket at school. I wish to be a great cricketer and be famous all over the world. I would love to play cricket for my country one day.

Bird Watching expedition to Thalangama Tank
During the Avurudu holidays as we planned to go on a bird watching tour,
I got up in the morning around 6a.m., on April 14 anxious to see where my father would take us. I was told that we were heading to Thalangama Tank.
Thalangama Tank is located between Pelawatte and Hokandara. My father told me the tank was built during the rule of
King Parakramabahu VI. My father, mother, two sisters and I got into the car and by about 6.40 a.m. we reached the tank.
I saw some birds swimming in the tank and some were walking on the lotus leaves. Flocks of birds were flying around the tank. Some were resting on tree branches. There were trees and bushes with fruits and bird nests. I saw a small bird hopping and suddenly it went inside a bush. We walked further on the bank. Then I saw a manacoca resting on the bank of the tank.
As I felt a little tired we sat on the bench by the tank. The view was beautiful and I saw more birds flying around the tank. Suddenly I heard a noise and looked to see it was a heron. A pair of budgerigars was sitting on a lamppost and another bird was sitting next to them. I saw a purple
swamp-hen walking on the lotus leaves.
A pond heron caught a fish and flew away.
A pheasant-tailed jacana (sawul diya sana) was also walking on the vegetation.
A cormorant was sitting on a log. Its wings were very big.
We stayed there till 9 a.m. and decided to go back home as it was the New Year day and there were other activities planned for the day.

My own riddles
They come to life in winter
Falling, falling in the air But beware
if you touch then
They will quickly disappear
It is an animal which walks
On four feet when young
On two feet when an adult
And on three feet when old
It has a head
But wears no hat It can run but never walks
It never sleeps but has a bed
It has a mouth but never talks
It is very
precious
It can boil and bubble
But if there is more or less
There surely will be trouble

My favourite singer
Keeps people happy,
Always sings cool songs,
Tells her feelings to all of us,
Yawning and smiling to all of us.
People like her and she likes us,
Even they’re in the Arctic zone,
Roar and so many are her songs,
Really tell me who is that, if
You won’t answer me, you will be a fool indeed.

Value of reading
Reading is a very useful hobby. It helps us to spend our leisure in a useful manner.
We can improve our knowledge by reading. We read novels, short stories, magazines and newspapers. We also read books on various subjects.
We can get pleasure by reading novels and short stories. We can learn good qualities of great persons by reading their biographies. I am a member of the public library. I borrow two books at a time and I can keep it for a period of two weeks. Books can be regarded as our friends. ‘Reading makes a perfect man.’ This is a great saying expressed by Francis Bacon.
Books basically contain knowledge, so by reading we gain knowledge on a variety of subjects. It is said that knowledge is power. The best way to gain knowledge is by reading books.

Healthy food
Finger millet is a traditional grain that is popular in Sri Lanka because of its nutritional value. It is called Kurakkan in Sinhala and Tamil. Vitamin B, iron and calcium are all present in abundance in finger millet. It is also rich in dietary fibre and helps in easy digestion.
The digestion process of finger millet is slow, therefore helps in keeping the blood sugar at a low level. As a result, it has become a favourite food among diabetic patients.
This wholesome grain is made into porridge, idli, pittu, rotti, hoppers and bread in various regions. In Sri Lanka, it is grown in Anuradhapura, Kegalle, Moneragala, Hambantota, Ratnapura, Nuwara Eliya, Ampara, Badulla and Jaffna districts.
Finger millet is a crop that has great potential if promoted as a healthy food.
