A magistrate has ordered the police to re-investigate a complaint made by a female student who alleged she was inhumanely ragged by a group of senior students at the Institute of Indigenous Medicine (IIM) in Rajagiriya.

The order this week came following objections raised by the female student’s lawyer, Shantha Herath.

The lawyer told Colombo’s Magistrate Augusta Perera that charges had been filed only for assault and causing minor injuries whereas the case should have been filed under the Prohibition of Ragging and Other forms of violence in Educational Institutions Act.

He said the eight suspect students should also be charged with unlawful assembly and robbery.

According to the lawyer, the alleged incident took place on September 1 last year in a lecture room while a lecture was in progress. The victim in her complaint to the police said the group of senior students, who came into the lecture room, grabbed her telephone, pulled her chain and started beating her up.

The student was later admitted to the National Hospital.
