Poson Full Moon Poya
To all Sri Lankan Buddhist people, Poson Poya is an important Poya day. The reason for this is King Dharmasoka’s son Arahath Mahinda Thero came to Sri Lanka with Buddhism on Poson Poya day. In June it is celebrated by Buddhists all over the world.
In that time Anuradhapura was ruled by King Devanampiyatissa. When the king was hunting, Arahath Mahinda Thero called him as, “Tissa” and then the king asked, “Who are you?” After that he explained to the king and Mihindu Thero asked questions to test the king’s knowledge. Arahath Mihindu Thero and Ittiya, Uttiya, Sambala, Bhaddasala, Sumana Samanera and Bhanduka Upasaka came to Mihintale Rock and till now it is a religious place. At last, Mihindu Thero preached “Chulla haththi padopama” Suthra to the king.
In June people decorate their houses, give free food, make lanterns, pandols etc. we all should remember this Poya day.

The hobby I like most
There are many hobbies that interest me. From them the hobby that I like the most is reading. I read books like encyclopedias, mysteries, adventures, comics and magazines like the Readers Digest and
Funday Times.
I learn a lot from reading books. Sometimes I teach my parents what I have read in encyclopedias. We learn a vast number of things about countries, people, animals, plants, ancient places and languages.
When I get tired and when I am free I read my novels. Authors like Janaki Sooriyarachchi, Enid Blyton, Roald Dahl, Dorothy Edwards and Sybil Wettasinghe have made my hobby interesting. When I read books, it makes me feel as if I am in another world. I enjoy my time reading and it’s a very fruitful hobby.

Man Vs Nature
A few weeks ago we were boiling in the heat and now rain water gushes over the roads. Such a huge transformation in such a small time… One may wonder whether this could be possible. When the truth does dawn, you will realize that the day all humans feared is finally visible. We are experiencing the devastating results of “Global Warming’.
This phrase isn’t mere synonym for the rising temperature. Rapid changes of temperature, altering of climate patterns, unpredictable weather, heavy rainfall with floods and ocean acidification etc., are all examples for the shocking results of global warming.
With the smoking industries and deforestation continuing, it is estimated that within the next 100 years there will be no rainforests left.
How ironic it is that 1.5 acres of the very forest that sucks in our pollution, is cut down every second. How amusing it is that man didn’t realize that he was digging his own grave by cutting down trees. Well, one thing is certain nature will not stand this destruction. Nature is supreme; and man is only a tiny part of it.
Mark my words, nature will make mankind pay for the destruction they have caused, and it is happening now, right before our eyes. Whatever we do cannot go against nature for then it will be nature that goes against us. But we humans will only realize it when the worst has happened, but then it will be too late.

Trip to Sigiriya
I was counting the days till we were going on a trip to Sigiriya and the day arrived. We left home in Galle the day before and stayed in a hotel close to Sigiriya.
The Sigiriya Rock Fortress was a great creation of King Kashyapa in the 5th century AD. King Kashyapa shifted his capital from Anuradhapura to Sigiriya. He created large water filled trenches around Sigiriya to enhance security, King Kashyapa created beautiful frescoes on the side of the rock. People who visited the rock scribbled verses on the mirror wall.
We entered the Sigiriya premises
at about 8 a.m. We enjoyed the beauty of the water garden below the rock. We had a look at various caves.
Then we started the climb.
We saw the frescoes and the mirror wall before reaching the lion’s gate. From there the steps to the summit were very steep. My brother and I got to the summit quickly. My parents were tired and panting along the way.
On the top of the rock, we saw the ruins of the king’s palace. We enjoyed the beautiful scenery from the top of the rock.
This was a memorable trip I will never forget.

Bees
Bees are insects. They make honey from flower nectar. They live in bee hives.
They save honey to use later. They sprinkle bees wax to help their eggs to hatch. They work together to collect as much honey as they can. They help flowers to pollinate. Their leader is the queen bee. Bees teach us unity.

Our school library
We have a small library in our school. The teacher-in-charge keeps it neatly and attractively. It provides a great service to the students. The books are arranged neatly in racks. There are novels, newspapers and many other reading material in our library.
A big notice with ‘Be silent’, keeps the silence in the library, so that no one is disturbed. We can borrow valuable books. If we fail to return them at the correct time we are fined.
Though our library is small, it plays a very important role in promoting the reading habit. It is our duty to protect the books without damaging them.

Remembrance of my grandfather
Normally we see a child’s father holding her hand and walking while talking. But for me it’s quite different. It was my grandpa who walked
and talked with me. He who took me to school.
He who played games and planted plants with me. He who bought books and sweets for me. He who was patient for the naughty things I did. He was my favourite person from our family.
He was a probation officer, and an active social worker. He did many religious activities with many famous monks. He helped people throughout his life, even when he was 92 years. His last breath was taken also when he was doing some social work.
Even though he passed away, nearly five years ago, he is still alive in the hearts of all the people whom he helped and mine too.

The best place I visited
The best place I have ever visited is the Galle Dutch Fortress, which is a historical monument. It is one of the most attractive places in Galle. It has an arch entrance which facilitates the visitors to explore the interior beauty of it. The enomous wall is an important point of amazement.
The towering clock tower which is on the top of the fort, faces towards the city. The view of the bus-stand from one side and the river with the high bridge; gives a very attractive sight to our naked eye.
The stony structure is surrounded by the blue sea. On one side it is the view of sea occupying a huge area. One of the marvellous features that mainly attracts is the setting of the exotic, bright red sun. It gives us a lovely sight.
The importance of the Galle Dutch Fortress is, it’s an unbelievable art of Archaeology. It is a fantastic masterpiece of work. The beauty increases with its winding narrow streets with the busy bustling. The unique fortress is an interesting place, which is worth being explored by any person.
This is the best place I have ever visited throughout my life and still those lovely memories are in my mind. And I’m sure that I’ll never forget this exciting place.
