Yesteryear well-known playwright Dayananda Gunawardena who enriched Sri Lankan theatre with entertaining plays will be showcased with three of his plays ‘Nari Bena’ and ‘Madhura Javanika’ along with the revived ‘Bak Maha Akunu’.

Dayananda Gunawardena’s ‘Bak Maha Akunu’, a drama which made a significant impact on the history of Sinhala theatre will go on the boards after a lapse of over 40 years at the Dayananda Gunawardena Commemoration Festival to be held later this month.

The theatrical presentation will go on the boards at 3 and 7.00 pm on June 26 2016 at the Lionel Wendt Theatre.

Gunawardena’s much loved ‘Naribena and Jasaya saha Lenchina’, and ‘Madhura Javanika’ will also be staged on June 24 and 25 respectively at this Festival.

‘Bak Maha Akunu’ was first performed in Sri Lanka in April 1963, with the ‘revolving stage’ being introduced to Sri Lanka.

‘The revival of ‘Bak Maha Akunu’ is another step in bringing back to the stage and introducing to another generation the classic works of modern Sinhala drama. As in the case of ‘Nari Bena’, this too is a comedy with an underlying seriousness – which gives an insight to our own lives, Wasantha Gunawardena said.

‘Bak Maha Akunu’ will feature veteran actors and actress as well as young and talented individuals. The cast includes Jayanath Bandara, Rathnasheela Perera, Sunil Tillekeratne, Janaka Ranasinghe, lndika Jayasinghe, Kelum Gamlath, Tharanga Kumari, Yohan Ranasinghe, Mahesh Amarakoon and Sanjeevani Wijekoon.

The festival is organized by Jude Srimal and all seats are box planned and tickets available only at the Lionel Wendt Theatre.
