Delivering sweet things
View(s):Crowds gather at one particular stall at the Colombo Food Festival, and come out beaming, their fingers wrapped around a gooey brownie or lips and teeth smeared from sticky cake pops. These yummy delights belong to those who bake full of love…home bakers. Sweetshop.lk has stepped up to make sure that these humble home bakers get a chance to shine and their goodies to be enjoyed by many.
Sweetshop.lk is an online cakes and desserts delivery service in Sri Lanka with an aim to have all home bakers of Sri Lanka under one roof – from the baking enthusiast who can’t afford a store to someone who bakes as a hobby. This online platform offers a rich and delicious array of sweet delights and treats at reasonable rates.
“We provide all these home bakers the facility of having an online store with an online payment gateway as well as a delivery partner which most of these home bakers cannot afford. Sweet Shop provides customers with options to pay for home baked goods via credit/debit cards through a safe portal”, says Sohan Chandrasena, CEO of Trap State, the technology firm that powers www.sweetshop.lk
Sweetshop offers a wide range of delicacies ranging from brownies, cupcakes, customized cakes, eclairs, muffins, dessert jars, mousses, tarts, cookies, trifles all freshly baked.
“This is not just a platform for home bakers, who mostly comprise of housewives and young women, this is an initiative to empower women, to showcase their talent and earn some money”, says Sohan who comes from a food oriented family.
Whether it’s a birthday of a loved one or a good friend, sweetshop.lk is ready to serve the increasing demand for customized cakes.
“Our bakers hardly go for bulk orders. Therefore the quality is retained and fine details are added to the fresh delights. One can send photos and designs of their choice and our bakers will incorporate it to the cakes and other goodies, “he adds.
Sweetshop has promotions such as Mother’s Day/ Father’s Day and gives the opportunity to surprise their loved ones with baked goodies along with a bouquet of flowers or customized mugs.
“This year’s Father’s Day promotion was a great success. We offered a variety of sweet packs from specially designed cupcakes, brownies to cake jars along with a customized mug. We had many orders as our packages varied from 2000 to 2500 rupees,”he says.
Just over a year old, Sweet Shop presently has about 12 full time bakers who work out of their homes waiting for orders.
The good thing of not having a physical store to sell baked goodies is that they are fresh and delicious, he says adding that once the order is placed these bakes are delivered fresh and unique and not stored or displayed for days.
As they are home cooks, priority is given to hygiene and quality ingredients, so those who place their orders on sweetshop.lk are ensured a quality product made full of love and care.
At present their services are within Colombo and its suburbs, also an option for those living overseas to send these delicious baked delights to their loved ones in Sri Lanka.
Thanking the dedicated Sweetshop team behind the success in social media, Sohan says they are planning to open up a cake boutique in which home bakers can showcase their creations and also be a point of collection for customers.
