Merc’s Rugby ’7s’, Women’s Tag Rugby Tourney on July 15, 16, 17 at CR&FC
View(s):Inaugurated in 1966, the 46th Mercantile Rugby Football ’7s’, along with the inaugural Mercantile Women’s Tag Rugby Tournament 2016, will be held on July 15, 16 and 17 at the CR&FC Grounds, Longdon Place, Colombo 7. Around 40 men’s teams are expected to participate in this tourney conducted by the Mercantile Rugby Football Association (MRFA), with the blessings of the SLRFU. The MRFA is now under new President, former Peterite, Shanaka Fernando (53) who has the unique record of participating in 30 tournaments out of 45 held up to date.
He started playing for Heath & Co. just out from school in 1982; later joined Metropolitan Group and continued to play for them continuously for over 25 years; his last Mercantile ’7′ was in 2013 on his 50th birthday. The new MRFA Secretary is Dinushka Jayatissa from Ceylon Tobacco Co.
The MRFA whilst calling for entries from affiliated firms and newcomers, had a meeting with the respective Captains and Secretaries from the prospective teams on Monday, June 27, 6 pm at the CR&FC Pavilion Lounge. All details pertaining to ’7s’ rules, playing conditions and other aspects were explained by the two rugby veterans, Wimal Perera and S.W. Chang. Calling in entries for the tournament closed on Friday, July 1, and the draw for the Groupings will be held on Friday, July 8, at 6 pm at the CR&FC Pavilion lounge. - LR
