Doubles Finalists found
Suraj Maduwantha-Shashrika Muthunayake and Rebeca Dalrine-Suchini Shashikala combinations emerged Men’s and Women’ Doubles Champions respectively at the Mid Year Novices Carrom Championship 2016 conducted by the Carrom Federation of Sri Lanka (CFSL) at its headquarters in Kohuwela last weekend. Over 350 slicers islandwide participated in this year’s event which was conducted in 4 categories- Men’s and Women’s Singles, Men’s and Women’s Doubles. As Carrom has been recognised as an event at the National Sports Festival, the enthusiasm and keenness was evident at the Championships, augurs well for its popularity to spread islandwide, where hitherto unknown talent will come to the fore.
In the Men’s Doubles Finals Suraj Maduwantha and Shashrika Muthunayake were given a tough time by Ishan Kannangara and Charith Madushanka with quality slice work was at its best. The first game was won by the Champs pair, but Kannangara-Madusanka fought back to take the second game. In a close fought deciding final Maduwantha-Muthunayake were stretched before registering a 25/20 victory. Rebeca Dalrine-Suchini Shashikala won the Women’s Doubles convincingly with a 2/0 defeat of Sadini Nirasha-Nethma Sewmini. The Champs dominated proceedings from the start, giving no respite to the challengers. Third place in the Men’s and Women’s event was won by E.A.D. Indrajith-K.W. Danuka and Nuwanthika Sanjeewani-Tashmila Kavindi respectively. Men’s and Women’s Singles Finalswill be played today (July 17) at the CFSL headquarters. - LR
