Dengue elimination programme reveals mosquito breeding grounds in 10 out of 23 schools at Kalutara
View(s):Health officials have said several dengue mosquito breeding grounds and mosquito larvae were discovered in ten schools, out of 23 which are set to conduct the G.C.E Advanced Level examinations, starting Tuesday (2), in the Kalutara and Beruwala MOH areas.
The situation was revealed during a three-day dengue eradication programme, carried out by the Ministry of Health, which commenced on Friday (29), and has focused on government, semi-government and pirivena schools in the Western Province, that will host the A/L examinations.
Following the discovery of breeding grounds for msquitos, officials decided to initiate legal action against the ten schools.
Officials said that during the past few months the schools had been advised to ensure school premises were kept clean and to destroy and to ensure the elimination of potential dengue mosquito breeding places.
Despite this however, the administration of the said schools had not taken any measures to ensure that school premisies were kept dengue free.
A total of 50 health officers are currently engaged in the dengue elimination programme at Kalutara and Beruwala.
