Regional Junior Open Golf Championships is on its way
The Regional Junior Open Golf Championships kick-started yesterday at picturesque Victoria Golf and Country Club, Rajawella and today will be the final day.
With Golf growing in popularity, the Sri Lankan Golf Union has now got more than 50 entries for the Championships.
The Golf development programs for Juniors are being actively carried with the help of the Sri Lankan Golf Union.
Niloo Jayathilake, Chairperson of Junior Golf Development Committee of the Sri Lanka Golf Union stated. “We believe that these young golfers would go on for national representation and such tournament opportunities would create the platform for the juniors to shine”.
Sri Lanka has produced many talented golfers who have started as Juniors and it will be interesting to watch how the present crop of youngsters like Tania Balasuriya, K. Danushan, Dilshan Malinda, Kayla Perera, Hiruna Siegera, Levon Niyarepola, VinodWeerasinghe, S Flamin, S Praveenraj, Nirekh Tejwani, Yannik Kumara, Mahisha Hirushan and Vikash Tangadore battle it out in a truly award winning Internationally designed golf course.
The top positions are being vied for in four age group categories Gold (15-17 years), Silver (12-14 years), Bronze (10-11 years) and Copper (9-years and under).
The top ranked players in 2015, and winners of the Sri Lanka Open 2015 are expected to keenly compete to maintain their current rankings as well.
This tournament that is open to both boys and girls under the age of 18 years and is a very important tournament in the golfing calendar as it will be considered for national ranking points in 2016. The prize giving ceremony would be held on Sunday after the second round.
Prima Sunrise Bread are sponsoring the Championships for the third consecutive year.
