UNESCO DG to hold talks and visit heritage sites
View(s):UNESCO Director General Irina Bokova arrived in the country last evening on an official visit.
She was received at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) by Education Minister Akila Viraj Kariyawasam, who is also the Chairman of the Sri Lanka National Commission for UNESCO and Executive Member of UNESCO.
During her stay Ms. Bokova will hold discussions with President Maithripala Sirisena and several Ministers. Today, she will be visiting UNESCO world heritage sites of Polonnaruwa and Sigiriya. She will also be meeting schoolchildren to speak about Sri Lanka’s heritage and issues faced by children.
Ms. Bokova who proceeds to Kandy tomorrow will pay homage at the Dalada Maligawa and visit to the Peradeniya University and the Peradeniya Botanical Gardens where she will plant a sapling to commemorate her visit. She will also meet the Central Province Governor and watch the Esala Perahera at night.
On Tuesday, she will participate at a discussion attended by 200 Sri Lankan scientists on the challenges and new trends in science and technology. She will also deliver a lecture on Peace and Development at the Lakshman Kadirgamar Institute.
On Wednesday she will meet United Nations (UN) representatives and will hold bilateral discussions with President Maithripala Sirisena.
That evening, Ms. Bokova is due to participate at an education summit at the South Asian Teachers’ Development Center in Meepe and later address journalists at the UN’s office in Colombo.
She concludes her visit on Thursday.
