The strong windy conditions (up to 60-70 kmph) experienced in some parts of the country and surrounding seas are expected to continue until next week, the Meteorological Department warned.

The department’s Early Warning Centre issued a bad weather advisory stating that with the onset of the monsoon, windy conditions combined with showers should also be expected over most parts of the island.

Several spells of light showers will occur in the Central and Sabaragamuwa Provinces while the Western and North-Western provinces and the districts of Galle, Matara and Jaffna may have a few showers.Thundershowers may occur in some parts of the Eastern Province particularly after 2 p.m, the Department warned.

Met Department Director (forecasting) Sarath Premalal said that climate patterns have changed across the Pacific Ocean with the ocean temperature rising by a few degrees resulting in floods, droughts and other disturbances in many regions of the world.

“We have examined the past weather patterns when El Nino was active and found that rains have increased in this part of the world in the last quarter of the year.

“Sri Lanka is better prepared than five years ago to deal with the fluctuating climate that has resulted in extreme weather conditions,” Mr. Premalal said.
