Semi-finalists found in U-17 cricket
S de S. Jayasinghe MMV Dehiwala along with St Peter’s ‘B’, St Sebastian’s and Karandeniya Central qualified to the semi-finals of the Under-17 Division Two cricket tournament with easy wins in their quarter-final matches that were played around the island. S de S. Jayasinghe MMV pulled off a convincing 160 runs over the hapless St. Patrick’ College team from Jaffna at Kotte. The foundation for their win was laid by Tharindu Peiris, Dilshan Dias and Kavindana Perera who cracked half tons which helped them pose a massive score of 303 for 5 in their allotted 50 overs.
St. Patrick’s despite a fighting knock of 79 coming from J. Anojan succumbed to the bowling trio of Dilshan Dias, Maduka Niroshan and Kavindana Perera who shared eight wickets.
St. Peter’s ‘B’ recorded a 59 runs win on the Duckworth/Lewis method against Nalanda ‘B’ in the quarter-final match played at Hanwella. Ruvin Seneviratne’s knock of 54 saw the Peterites end their innings with a modest score of 208 and the Nalandians in their run chase was unable to make any impression. The quarter-final match between St. Sebastian’s and Al Azhar College turned out to be a one sided affair with the Sebs having bundled out their opponents for a low score of 60 racing to the target in the ninth over. Karandeniya Central secured a comfortable five wicket win over Ananda ‘B’ in the quarter-final encounter played at Panadura. Ananda ‘B’ batting first was bowled out for 113 and Karandeniya Central reached the required target of 114 runs in the 22nd over.
