Google balloons and Wi-fi but law and order behind the times

In this day and age of Google balloons and the promise of Wi-Fi across Sri Lanka, one would expect government ministries to keep abreast with new technology.  This is not the case. During the flash floods, the Business Times pointed out how the website of the National Disaster Management Centre was a disaster itself as it needed to be badly updated.  Last week, accessing the Ministry of Law and Order and Southern Development http://www.lawandorder.lk/ to get more information on a story was a similar case as lo and behold, the website is far behind the times. The only video in the home page is that a story about

“Secretary to the Ministry of Law and Order Major General (Rtd) Nanda Mallawarachchi” who was appointed in 2013. The notice board on the left column which says ‘click to view’ has a press release dated 20-11-2013 – which reads as: Promotions to the Rank of Deputy Inspector General of Police – The following Senior Superintendents of Police have been promoted with effect from 20.11.2013 to fill 6 Deputy Inspector General vacancies existing in the Police Department.  This website is one of the most important ones of the government dealing with law and order which has come under severe scrutiny owing to a rise in crimes in recent months.
