To mark the Silver Jubilee of the Kelaniya University Medical Faculty, the faculty is organising a medical exhibition titled ‘Medikel 2016′ aimed at profiling avenues of medicine and medical practices. It will be held on September 23-29 at the faculty premises at Ragama.  Prof. W. Abeywickreme, Chairman, Exhibition Committee, told reporters at a briefing to announce the event that its theme is ‘Medical Knowledge for a Healthier Tomorrow’ and it would educate the public on various specialties of the medical field plus the newest inventions in e-technology.  The exhibition is divided into several zones. Growth, development and reproductive health zone will provide knowledge on all the stages of life with explanations on childhood, adolescent years, newly married/starting a family phase, pregnancy stage and the geriatric population.

The emergency management and first aid zone provides information on unseen threats inside the house, covering the aspects of poisonous animals and plants, precautions for accidents and response that needs to be given in an emergency. Mental health provides information on mental wellbeing and strategies that could be adopted mentally to face common challenges.  A special zone will be there for the public to witness unseen technological marvels of modern medical science and in specialized medical expertise.  Prof Abeywickreme, on the sidelines of the briefing, told the Business Times that this university was the first university here to establish DNA and Forensic Labs. The Faculty has also started a Thalassemia unit and has a Department of Disabilities Studies.  -(QP)
