Man nabbed with Rs.1 mn withdrawn from credit cards stolen from elderly foreigner
View(s):A 28-year-old man who had befriended an elderly Australian national for more than seven years, was found to have illicitly withdrawn more than Rs one million, without the knowledge of the foreigner, a police investigation has revealed.
The suspect, Jude Raja Joseph, from Hatton, was arrested by the Kollupitiya police when he was found loitering outside a ‘Spa’.
Kollupitiya Police Crimes Division Officer-in-Charge, M.P.D.I. Kulasekara said a police cycle patrol had observed the man for several days in the early hours of the day, and questioned him.
The man had claimed he was waiting to visit the Spa.
Police had searched the man and found Rs 1 million in his possession, which he claimed was a withdrawal. However, on a further investigation police found the credit cards used to withdraw the money belonged to another person.
However, subsequently, he admitted having stolen the credit cards from the foreigner and used them to withdraw money, after which he would replace the card with the foreigner in the early hours of the day.
He said he used the money to visit Spas where he spent between Rs 60,000 and Rs 70,000.
The foreigner, in his statement, claimed he had not given permission to withdraw the money.
The suspect has been remanded.
