The brothers show their skill: Rohan on guitar and Ishan at the piano

“Pick a song for us to sing,” said Rohan De Lanerolle, “what song would you like us to sing?” When given an answer from the audience, he announced that they would be singing the song they rehearsed anyway. Humorous comments like this really gave life to the recent De Lanerolle brothers concert ‘Keeping it real’. The brothers steered away from their usual dinner performances at leading hotels, choosing the BMICH instead for this live instrumental concert.

The show began with a video that depicted the journey of the De Lanerolle brothers from the airport to the BMICH. The audience watched the brothers getting down from a plane and arriving in Sri Lanka, travelling to the BMICH, going backstage and getting ready to perform. This was followed by a real time red carpet entrance where Rohan and Ishan walked into the hall and got onstage to begin the show. The concert began with much excitement as the brothers began the show with Tina Turner’s iconic hit  ‘Simply the Best’. The performance was aired on screen and viewers were thus able to see the band’s every move.

The songs selected by the brothers were all old time favourites from famous singers such as Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra to Engelbert Humperdinck. They kept the show going throughout, performing hit song after song. They performed Jim Reeves’s famous single ‘He’ll have to go’ while playing instruments with Rohan on guitar and Ishan on piano where Rohan amused the audience with his comments about his inability to find the ‘C’ chord. They even had a friendly argument where they teased each other about supposedly putting on weight and getting old. The live band backed them up well, keeping a good tempo throughout and the brothers in turn introduced each and every member while they all played a beat for the audience.

Overall, ‘Keeping it Real’ was a great show for people interested in reliving the days of hits like ‘New York’ and ‘Quando, quando, quando’.There were songs to sing and clap along to.

It was clear that the performance was well received because the audience shouted out for an encore – which request the brothers duly obliged.
